Background
FHR Services operates a SaaS platform used by multi-site food businesses to manage compliance with official UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) data. The system needed to process and reconcile millions of establishment and inspection records, generate accurate compliance insights quickly, and deliver a reliable experience to a growing client base.
Over time, core operational workflows — such as report generation and large data imports — became slow and resource intensive. Manual verification and validation took significant time, and gaps in security controls introduced risk to data integrity and tenant separation. Development and deployment practices were inconsistent, constraining delivery velocity and increasing operational overhead.
Approach
To address these challenges, the modernisation effort focused on three strategic areas: improving performance, strengthening security, and enhancing usability and operational resilience.
Performance improvements started with a deep analysis of database behaviour. Query patterns were profiled across critical workflows, and indexing strategies were introduced that aligned with real usage. Long-running import jobs were restructured to be more memory-efficient and to process large datasets incrementally, reducing peak resource usage. Inefficient query patterns were rewritten to eliminate unnecessary computation in the highest-volume contexts.
Security improvements began with a comprehensive review of access control and tenancy boundaries. Scoped middleware was applied consistently to enforce tenant isolation, and data-modifying endpoints were hardened to reduce risk. Additional safeguards and validations were introduced to address gaps in request handling, and documentation was created to support ongoing compliance with data protection obligations.
Usability enhancements reworked reporting dashboards and risk assessment interfaces to make high-value insights immediately accessible. Navigation and layout were refined to support clarity and ease of use, and feedback mechanisms were improved so users can more quickly identify and resolve data issues.
Infrastructure and deployment processes were simplified and made more repeatable. A webhook-driven deployment pipeline replaced ad-hoc manual steps, and local development environments were standardised to reduce onboarding friction and variation between environments.
Outcomes
The work delivered measurable improvements across performance, operational efficiency, and platform reliability. Report generation that once took tens of seconds now completes in a few seconds, enabling users to iterate on insights without delay. Large imports that previously struggled with memory exhaustion now execute with substantially lower resource usage, improving throughput and reducing failure rates.
Database queries across core workflows benefited from targeted indexing and refactoring, with sustained improvements in response time for complex filtering and aggregation operations. Security posture was strengthened across tenant boundaries, increasing confidence in data segregation and integrity.
On the user-facing side, clients now benefit from quicker access to critical compliance information, clearer reporting, and an interface that is noticeably more intuitive and pleasant to work with. Internally, developers operate within a more predictable deployment process that mitigates risk and supports smoother releases.
Client Feedback
“The difference is night and day. Our reports that used to time out now generate in seconds. The interface is so much clearer and far more pleasant to work with — it’s genuinely transformed the system. Glen was a pleasure to work with: communicative, thorough, and highly capable. The improvements have given us confidence that our data is protected and that we can deliver reliable performance to our clients.”
